Kochi witnesses Jewish wedding after 21 years
Monday, December 29th, 2008The wedding was solemnised as per the ‘Talmud’, book of Jewish rituals.
As the family had sought police protection to solemnise the wedding in the aftermath of the Mumbai terror attacks, there was heavy police presence in the premises, and only selected invitees were allowed to witness the wedding.
A metal detector was placed at the entrance of the synagogue, police said.
The family of Shelomo belong to the Thekkumbhagam congregation of the Cochin Jewish community and Susan from the Bene Israel (Sons of Israel) community in Mumbai, the synagogue sources said.
With many Jewish community members have migrated to Israel years ago, there are only 48 members left, 50 per cent of them in octogenarians.
The last Jewish wedding was held in 1987 here in the synagogue, noted for its mid-18th century hand painted willow patterned floor tiles from Cantum in China, Hebrew inscriptions on stone slabs, scrolls of the Old Testament and ancient scripts on copper plates.
